PLANS

Lets take a walk through my project.....

First Floor: Apple Retail Store/ Outdoor Fitness Area
I decided to switch the entry location from the second floor fitness area and the Apple Retail area. I wanted to emphasize the retail store by using the overhanging waterfall as a formal, eye-catching entrance. Also, by relocating the entry to the fitness area, it creates a larger retail space on the first level.
The outdoor ramp is a bit more aggressive - twisting and turning through the climbing wall - creating an interaction between the climbers and the walkers.

Second Floor: Fitness Area/Upper Plaza
The Fitness Area encompasses the entire second floor. The pool is one long element - starting from the Pru Center food court wall to the "infinity pool" tip. I wanted to emphasize the fact that the pool mirrors the Pru Tower by extending and elongating it through the building.
I created a ramp which encompasses the indoor pool area, which leads to a third floor balcony/diving area.
A new outdoor ramp, also twisting and turning, leads to the green roof deck area.

Third Floor/Roof Deck:
This area will be a green roof, which can be accessed and used by the public.

Mich,

Some quick comments:

- good starting point that could be further simplified: why do you need a ramp up to the fitness studio on the first floor? Would an elevator not work better? The ramps in general could be geometrically simpler by reducing the turns.

- when working in section make an analytic drawing of your plans highlighting the ramps: I have a feeling that at this point they don't really relate to each other. However, it would be great, if they worked "in concert".

- you need to show existing entrances, especially to the food court on the upper level where they impact your plaza levels

- What is in the "fitness park"? It would be too bad, if it were just a collection of fitness trail devices. Again, the question is how the elements work together and integrate themselves into the design.

Overall good job! I am looking forward to seeing your sections!

Hi Michelle -

Plans are looking nice. I think it would be cool if you made your circulation ramps could be a little more interactive and perhaps part of the exercise of going there. Is there a reason you have people looking into a wall as they move into the building? If so, you probably want to indicate that on the plans.
Good luck this week!

Michelle,

I like the "Mission Impossible" font that you're using to title your boards...but for me (and this is just aesthetic opinion), I'm not sure it goes really well with the iPod board frame (which I also like). That's just a presentation thing, though, and again, only my opinion.

Regarding your plan, one that the really jumped out was the infinity pool and how it comes down right over the retail entry. Potentially, you've got a really amazing experience right there. What if the waterfall comes all the way to the ground, and visitors have to walk through it to get into the store? Obviously, you don't want them getting wet, so maybe it frames around some kind of clear glass entry canopy, but you get the experience of almost literally walking through this waterfall to enter the store -- and all of the accompanying sensory experiences that go with doing that. Just an idea of how to really celebrate and draw attention to that entry...

Think of it as a "shower" for after you're done exercising! (OK, that's a stretch.)

Mike,
Thanks for the comments, but the waterfall does come to the ground - as noted in my original plans and model. The experience of walking under the pool (with water flowing off the end of the infinity pool to create a waterfall) was my original intent. But thank you for letting me know that the element of the waterfall does not read clearly enough. Perhaps it will become apparent in the elevations/model.

I agree with Enno that you could make the ramps similar but from the way you are consistently making them you have a specific point you want to make. In plan it almost looks like paths someone would hike to get up the side of a steep mountain, you should capitalize on the many “scenic” views these twists and turns offer. I wonder if the diving platform could be larger to allow people an above view of the plaza and climbing wall as well as the diving function. Also, I noticed you have kept the diving platform separated from the roof plaza even though they appear to be at the same level. Is this to keep a strong divide between the public roof and private fitness area? Looks like you are making great progress, have fun!

Hi Michelle,

You've got some really great ideas! I'm already exhausted after "walking" through your plans. j/k ;o) I like how you have all these great ideas but I think maybe you could integrate them together somehow; sort of relate them with one another. I really the idea of one side you have the rock climbers and then you have people walking along the side of them. Maybe it would be interesting to create the ramp pathway where you can walk under the rock climbers or over them (this is just an example) or make parts of the infinity pool to fall over on the side to connect with the people walking up the ramp (a nice serene sound as you're walking.

Good luck! I can't wait to see the outcome. I'll have my work out clothes ready. (haha - I know, I'm such a dork!)
